Congress of the LinE Cluster ‘Multilingualism in Foreign Literature Teaching and Learning’
Inter-University Research Centre ‘LinE - Language in Education’
The Congress will be held on 13 and 14 November 2025
at the Humanities Department of the University of Trento.
Within the scientific panel "Plurilingualism and Education" of the project "Plurilingualism and canons in the European cultural space" of the Department of Excellence - Humanities Department of the University of Trento, the LinE Cluster “Multilingualism in Foreign Literature Teaching and Learning” is organising a congress to present and discuss the results of the survey on the multilingual education of foreign literatures and the intertwining of language and literature in comparison between school and university and between the Italian and international contexts, conducted by collecting over 230 questionnaires from language and literature teachers and lecturers.
While the English Medium Instruction is becoming increasingly widespread in Italian universities, the use of other foreign languages to teach non-linguistic subjects is quite rare, with the exception of the context of teaching of foreign literature. In this context, different languages can constitute the vehicular language for teaching, together with Italian L1, and the question of the use of learners’ L1/s, the language of the taught literature and other languages is relevant.
During the congress, the linguistic and communicative strategies adopted for teaching Arabic, English, French, German, Russian and Spanish literature and in the literary translation activities of language and translation courses in the same languages in Italian universities are compared with the strategies used by the foreign language and literature teachers in Italian schools and the Italian language and literature teachers in non-Italian universities, in order to better understand the complex plurilingual dynamics of foreign literature teaching in different linguistic and cultural contexts.
